99: First time to cooperate with MD Gallery?
Fred: This is my first exhibition in China. Last year, I have done a show with Magda Danysz Gallery—Paris gallery. This is the first time that I work with the Shanghai gallery.
99: How did you meet Magda?
Fred: The first time I met with Magda was a few years ago. I knew Magda’s gallery and some of the artists that she worked with, not personally though. But I was interested in what she did. She reached me first, we got in contact and made plan to work together.
99: You use many different kinds of materials to do your pieces. Do you think the materials somehow inspired your artwork?
Fred: Yes, of course. Every material has a deictic for what it does. Or you can put it otherwise---When I want to make something, I choose my materials.
99: Could you explain this art piece?
Fred: We are standing by a quit new art piece. It’s only a few months old. I did it first with English text---After Dark. But now in China, I want to adapt it in Chinese. We asked co-workers of the gallery to help working on it together. We worked it out in Chinese. It has the same connotation as it does in English.
99: Why did you choose mirrors?
Fred: The idea behind the work is actually a coincident. I just saw some of the ink pots and paint pots in my studio, and their covers reflected lights to the wall. So I thought that it must be possible to use different kinds of pots or dics or whatever, or other reflective materials, to create a work. This is how I got started.
99: space, shadow, lights. How do you arrange them?
Fred: I consider myself as a sculptor who writes. You can see that. My ideal day, when I get up, I can have coffee as long as I want. I go to my studio, and I start to write. That’s my favorite work. But in a gallery, I have to adapt to the available space. Of course, as a sculptor, I’m used to work with it. But when I write, I sculpt, I make a drawing of it, I have to put all these things together. In the phrases I put on the wall, it’s a combination of drawing and sculpting and writing. It’s different things together.
99: future plan after this exhibition?
Fred: In a few months, I will do a show like this in Dubai. At the end of next year, I will have a show in the gallery that I work with in Belgium.
