Founded in August 2005, Nanjing Square Gallery of Contemporary Art sets her exhibition places in Xuanwu District, Pukou District and Jiangning District in Nanjing separately, which are 8000 square meters in total. It’s an unofficially compound art institution, with the main functions of exhibition, preservation, research and education. The principle of this gallery is to reform the environment for contemporary Chinese art, improve the public understanding of it, and promote the communication between contemporary art and the whole society. To create the proper space, which could help showing contemporary art, the gallery invited the world- known American architect Mr. Steven Holl and Austrian architect Mr. Rainer Pirker to design these two exhibition buildings in Pukou District and Jiangning District respectively.
The gallery plans to launch a significant art exhibition every five years after the buildings’ completion, meanwhile it will hold constructive exhibitions occasionally to display the trend of contemporary art and evoke the local arty atmosphere. Aiming at the untraditional Chinese visual expression history, which lasts over a hundred years, the gallery will set up a permanent exhibition room for important artists, open to the public perennially, it will also arrange art lectures to popularize some common sense to the public. The gallery will take part in the regional and international cooperation and communication in the globe art areas energetically. We hope to make Nanjing Square Gallery of Contemporary Art as a window open for the public, as a base for the artists, as a center for the researchers.
