Who is the MIRRORMAN?
The MIRRORMAN is a walking mirror born in Beijing’s 798 Art District. It is an artist, attired in a mirror-effect outfit, rambling through the streets in a city. As the artist walks in the street, the urban scenes become changeable scenery on his mirror-encased body. The MIRRORMAN is a fairy of reflections wandering through a city, a chameleon in its urban jungle.
The MIRRORMAN is a product of modern cities – composed of the same glass, steel, mirrored surfaces and geometrical shapes that make up the appearance of a modern city. It is not only a logo for Man. It is also endowed with a human personality. In a precise manner, it captures the constant of change, while faithfully reflecting the world around it. The MIRRORMAN is an embodiment and a symbol of Man – an amalgam of the abstract and the deconcrete Man. The MIRRORMAN is beyond classes, hierarchy, culture, geolocality, ethnic groups, nations, vocations, and all kinds of man-made categories. It embodies free will and equality. The MIRRORMAN is a living being with emotions, sensibility and personality. It exists as a result of its environment. It sparkles as a result of the sparks of the others around it. The MIRRORMAN is a pure, transparent man, a flat body propped up by a human body.
The MIRRORMAN is also an outfit devised by artists to shield a human body and a human face. Unlike most clothes, the steel garment only hides the front of the wearer and leaves his/her sides and back exposed. The person in the outfit becomes hard to identify, therefore could be anyone, any adult. It could be you. It could be me. Or it could well be he or she. It could be anyone’s shadow, and anyone’s shared humanity.
The MIRRORMAN is also a mirror. Unlike most mirrors, it is always walking. It has rigid facial features and indisguisable expression_r_rs. It is an entity of conflicts, a reflection of life and experience. When the MIRRORMAN is walking, it feels like a legitimate member of the society. But when it is hopping, it becomes more like an extraterrestrial being, because its image turns shifty and the world it reflects turns restless and skittish.
When the MIRRORMAN was walking in the streets of downtown New York, people got very excited. They instinctively called out, ‘My God! It’s the MIRRORMAN!’ However when he was pacing leisurely in Beijing’s streets, the city’s security guards got all alarmed and anxious. They stared at the MIRRORMAN suspiciously, not knowing how to react! To them, the world was a sure source of uncertain factors. At the sight of anything unusual, their immediate reaction was an incipient dread of what might went wrong.
The MIRRORMAN will surely carry on walking. While it is walking, the city will present it with more exciting incidents and developments. While it is walking, it will continue to interact with the world, capturing every fabulous fleeting moment.
