Success, Shanghai Style
MoCCA's debut at the bustling and prestigious ShContemporary 2009 last week was a study in how to make waves in the giant sea of contemporary art.
Standing out against a backdrop of more than 120 exhibitors---primarily from Asia but speckled with a few European gallerists as well---the MoCCA booth was easily recognized by the name and variety of its sculptures and paintings on display. Among these, works by famed realist Li Guijun and painting metaphysician He Hongbei received exceptional embrace during the early VIP showing. Nonetheless, it was the hypnotic oeuvre of Fan Xiaoyan, Effortless, that first caught the heart of one particularly knowledgeable collector, who showed no hesitation in committing to take the sculpture home despite its massive dimensions.
Besides enthusiasts, art buyers and an inspired general public, the jam-packed Exhibition Center also saw a huge turnout of interested media, with reporters and photographers both domestic and foreign making a special effort to cover MoCCA's debut presence.
