1947年生于澳大利亞，畢業(yè)于新卡斯特大學(xué)。
近30年內(nèi)分別在歐洲、亞洲、澳洲和美洲的各個(gè)國(guó)家舉辦過(guò)個(gè)展及聯(lián)展，并且多幅作品被國(guó)際美術(shù)收藏家協(xié)會(huì)收錄，曾獲得過(guò)美洲杯國(guó)際藝術(shù)金獎(jiǎng)等國(guó)際藝術(shù)大獎(jiǎng)。
漢根除了藝術(shù)之余非常熱愛(ài)冒險(xiǎn)和挑戰(zhàn)。曾參加過(guò)世界杯航海競(jìng)標(biāo)賽，并在1995年獲得了神秘游艇獎(jiǎng)。由于澳大利亞電視臺(tái)關(guān)于他的“飛濺的顏色”電視秀節(jié)目的關(guān)系，漢根目前正在英國(guó)、美國(guó)、泰國(guó)等地進(jìn)行創(chuàng)作。相信不久，他也會(huì)應(yīng)邀來(lái)到中國(guó)。
人們總是稱(chēng)他為“過(guò)目不忘的畫(huà)家”。因?yàn)樗枥L的都是人們生活中可以隨意見(jiàn)到的一切。而他的技術(shù)也在近五十年的繪畫(huà)生涯中得到了修訂與完善。即便如此，他在繪畫(huà)方面的天賦還是讓世界各國(guó)藝術(shù)家稱(chēng)奇，他總是能夠快速地勾勒出準(zhǔn)確的畫(huà)面，不假思索便能調(diào)和顏色明暗，而且他的作品總是很自然很和諧。
不同于一般的文字作品，漢根總是喜歡帶著濃厚的感情作畫(huà)。在他看來(lái)，任何一幅作品都不需要人的講解，因?yàn)橛∠笾髁x就是觀眾的所看所想，也是畫(huà)家的意象。所以比起實(shí)實(shí)在在的東西，他愿意畫(huà)那些存在他腦中的虛幻的畫(huà)面。
他總是相信快樂(lè)能夠帶來(lái)好運(yùn)。正如一次采訪中他的回答“如果要我必須描繪內(nèi)心的恐懼我也可以，但現(xiàn)在的我更樂(lè)意畫(huà)積極向上的東西。因此我贊美陽(yáng)光的事物。” 他的畫(huà)總是充滿了自信，人性和實(shí)用性，且均是歌頌真善美而避免黑暗的主題。
而畫(huà)畫(huà)對(duì)于他來(lái)說(shuō)，不僅僅是事業(yè)，是愛(ài)好，更是一種與生俱來(lái)由基因就決定了的，就像他說(shuō)的，周遭的環(huán)境和畫(huà)畫(huà)的癮總是促使他一次次地拿起畫(huà)筆不愿放下。而挑戰(zhàn)過(guò)去的那些偉大的畫(huà)家們更是他不斷創(chuàng)作的動(dòng)力。
在他的《要成為成功的畫(huà)家前你必須知道的》一書(shū)中，我們看到了這樣一段文字：若想要成功，基本的技法積累和對(duì)卓越的追求是不可或缺的。因?yàn)槟愕南敕ň蜎Q定了你是誰(shuí)以及現(xiàn)在做什么。因此，成功的秘訣之一就是熱情，對(duì)畫(huà)畫(huà)的熱情。而我們的創(chuàng)作基于我們所看見(jiàn)的一切。就個(gè)人而言，一些天分，一些學(xué)習(xí)，便能找到通向美學(xué)世界的路。而誠(chéng)實(shí)，尊重則是其成功的決定原則。
他認(rèn)為所有的畫(huà)都是客觀現(xiàn)實(shí)的反映?？赡苁钱?huà)家眼前某個(gè)具體的東西，也可能是其腦中的想法。而很多時(shí)候，他的畫(huà)作則是兩者兼有的。因?yàn)樗偸窍矚g結(jié)合物質(zhì)和精神進(jìn)行創(chuàng)作，刻畫(huà)那些源自現(xiàn)實(shí)并對(duì)絕大部分的人都有意義的事情，而在創(chuàng)作的過(guò)程當(dāng)中，他總是充滿了激情，即便身體休息了，想法卻還在不停地超越，這也是他對(duì)于畫(huà)畫(huà)從不感到厭倦的原因之一。

Robert's paintings have been featured in the International Fine Art Collector (1992 and 1994). He was awarded the America's Cup International Artist Gold Medal and the coveted Mystic Yachting Award in 1995.
Robert is always up to something new and challenging. At present he lives in suspended animation between USA, UK, Thailand and wherever the next episode of his TV series ‘Splash of Color’ takes him.
Robert goes about his art with confidence, humility and pragmatism. He explains, "when you look at things, you tend to concentrate on one element, a boy or girl at the water's edge, for example. It's hard to bring into meaningful vision the entire scene at the one occasion. It's all there, but it's not defined and it's that which is peripheral to the starting point. The key to impressionism is keying in the peripheral to the starting point".
Although Hagan paints varied subjects, landscapes, seascapes, western, portraits and figurative, he insists that his paintings here and there go beyond obvious recognizable subjects. This is especially the case now in 2005. He says, "Make a painting like the recognizable subject rather than executing a literal representation. It's better to paint the effect of what is there...what is left in the back of he head! That is impressionism, and that I hope is where I am."
